Three finalists were announced today as the candidates for the University of Toledo’s future president.

The three candidates who will be invited to campus for interviews are Sharon Gaber, Christopher Howard, and Michele Wheatly.

Sharon Gaber, the provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Arkansas since 2009, has held multiple positions in educational leadership. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Occidental College, a master’s from the University of Southern California, and a doctorate in city and regional planning from Cornell University.

Christopher Howard, the president of Hampden-Sydney College since 2009, is the first African-American president in the college’s history and has served in the U.S. Air Force. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy, a doctorate in philosophy in politics from Oxford University, and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard University.

Michele Wheatly is a professor and the senior advisor to the president at West Virginia University. She earned a bachelor’s degree and a doctoral degree in comparative physiology from Birmingham University in the United Kingdom. She later completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary in Canada, and she received executive training from the Harvard University Kennedy School of Government.

While the candidates have been announced, a UT press release said UT Board of Trustees Chairman Joseph Zerbey claimed the most important part is still to come.

“The most important part of the search will take place in the coming weeks and as members of the UT community, you will play a critical role,” he said.

Zerbey also said the itineraries for the candidates would be created and published soon, detailing everything from the leadership they will meet with to the open forums they will attend.

In addition, Zerbey praised the presidential search committee.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to say how thankful we are for the input, expertise and guidance from faculty, staff and student leadership, as well as alumni, UT supporters and members of the community who served on the search committee.”
