Greg Seifert, Student Government presidential candidate, filed a complaint against competing SG presidential ticket Carl Nelson and Jon Wang for posting undocumented endorsements.

The endorsements the Nelson/Wang ticket posted were from the Crossings Activity Board (RSA), Spectrum and SAAB and were posted without the proper paperwork.

A hearing was held on March 26 before the weekly Election Board meeting. Nelson and Wang violated three sections of the Election Board Manual, the document detailing the rules of the SG elections.

The articles violated are thus: Article III Section 2, defining what campaign materials are; Article V Section 2.4.1, stating that candidates are responsible for any and all material approved by the Election Board that supports their campaign; and Article V Section 7.1.1, stating that all campaign materials must be approved by the Election Board.

Seifert filed the complaint after checking with Krystal Weaver, chairwoman of the Election Board, that there was no paperwork filed for the endorsements posted in the “Carl Nelson and Jon Wang for SG” Facebook group.

According to Weaver, Nelson said he made verbal agreements with the groups who were endorsing him, which does not fulfill the requirements outlined by the Election Board Manual.

The hearing for the complaints was orderly, but the board delayed the hearing in order to find Nelson, who was in the building but not originally present at the hearing.

“We had to adjourn for a second to retrieve Carl, who insisted he was clocked in [to work],” Weaver said.

Neither ticket member is required to be present at a hearing regarding a complaint against them. Only a representative of the ticket is required to attend the hearing.

The Nelson/Wang ticket received 10 points for each unfiled endorsement and was given until midnight that night to remove the postings or another complaint would be filed.

The Nelson/Wang ticket now has a total of 35 points, and the other SG presidential ticket - Greg Seifert and Kristina Karbula - only has five points.

If a ticket receives 40 points in a race, all posted campaigning materials must be removed. If a ticket reaches the 50-point mark, all types of campaigning are prohibited. Receiving 60 points disqualifies a ticket from the election.
