We at #UTDivest have overcome much adversity in bringing our divestment resolution to the student body. Though our movement has been misrepresented and slandered as aggressive and discriminatory, we simply are here to promote ethical investments by the University of Toledo. As students, we have a right to criticize investments in companies that are complicit in the violation of human rights.

On February 17th, we presented our resolution for the first time to Student Government, only for it to be dismissed as “unconstitutional” when we were informed the day before that it was, in fact, constitutional. The meeting was closed and completely lacked transparency. However, after a reversed decision by the Student Judicial Committee, we were able to return with our resolution today, March 3rd. Despite interference and pressure by outside opponents and the administration, we carried on with what we believe is the right thing to do. How can we, as a university, claim that we aspire to “improve the human condition” while simultaneously investing in corporations that contribute to the illegal occupation of the West Bank and Israeli war crimes in Gaza? This resolution is a call for peace and accountability on the part of the state of Israel and our university.

#UTDivest is a diverse group of individuals from all religious and cultural backgrounds who are passionate about justice. Regardless of the outcome, we have introduced this conversation on campus and raised awareness about the utter atrocities committed against the Palestinian people. And therefore, we have done our job.
