The only presidential ticket for student government elections this year was announced on March 18 at the weekly SG meeting.

Cody Spoon is running for the position of president, with Ian Michalak as his running mate for vice president.

SG senator Benjamin Lynn, senator, argued that the appointed deadline for submitting paperwork should be extended. The required paperwork included a necessary 500 signatures as prerequisite for being eligible to run.

“It only makes sense; how can we have the forms be due before the election manual is approved by senate?” Lynn asked. His motion to move the date for paperwork submission ultimately failed.

Spoon said he has mixed feelings about the lack of other competitors for the race.

“As a competitor, it’s obviously a positive thing to feel like you are the only person in the running, but as a supporter of democracy, it kind of disappoints me that they were unable to get their signatures signed,” Spoon said.

He added that technically his ticket’s signatures have not been validated, so they are not officially in the running yet.

Michalak said the two of them will be focusing on staying transparent and reaching out to students.

“I think we just want to be up here and make sure students know what we are doing. I think that we want to make sure people know the changes we’re going to do because I think it’s equally important if we’re not running against somebody that we’re transparent in what we do and we get some more excitement around student government,” Michalak said.
