The University of Toledo men’s tennis team secured a 6-1 victory over Youngstown State last Saturday, but fell the next day 4-3 to Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

“We’re getting better on the big points and I think we’re playing better as a team every match,” head coach Al Wermer said. “We’re learning how to battle together and having some fun fighting together.”

These matches put the Rockets at 2-8 for the season.

In the victory against YSU the Rockets took five of six single matches sweeping three of them, and they also took two of three wins in doubles competition.

Juniors Mark Singnil and Nicky Wong pulled together and scored a 6-4 victory in No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Garrett Cona and freshman Stjepan Sisko were also able to achieve a victory, winning 6-3 in the No. 2 doubles slot.

After falling 5-6 in the first set in the No. 1 singles slot, Singnil was able to overcome his opponent, taking the next two sets 6-4 and then 10-1. He improved to 3-1 in the first singles spot and 5-3 overall.

Sisko was also able to achieve a victory in the second singles spot, defeating his opponent in consecutive matches. The freshman improved to 3-1 this season.

Wong, junior Roberto Meza and senior Ben Brocker earned singles victories as well, in the No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively.

In Sunday’s match, the men needed a little help from their final doubles team, but the pair fell short against IPFW.

Singnil and Sisko placed first in singles in consecutive sets, the No. 1 and No. 2 spots respectively. Wong won in the No. 3 spot coming back after dropping the first set 3-6. He went on to win the next two sets 6-3 and 6-1.

IPFW would not give up easily, getting victories in the No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles spot.

In the decisive third doubles match, IPFW Jonathan Raa and Karl Wangensten-Oye were able to overcome Toledo’s Ryan Jorgensen and Boris Pak 6-3 to give their team the victory.

“We’re going to be far better than what we’re showing right now,” said Wermer. “We are extremely consistent at being inconsistent. I’m confident we’ll get much better.”

UT will have another chance at consistency when they host Wayne State and Dayton next Friday. Toledo will then finish the weekend by hosting Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sunday at 11 p.m.
